The word “brother” has come under attack from religious conservatives who say it suggests that the two are in league to destroy Christianity.
But critics argue the two brothers have never been so close.
The Brothers of Christ were formed by the late Baptist pastor and activist George Fox in 1952 and have been linked to several violent incidents including the murders of members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The brothers’ controversial relationship with the Klan dates back to the early 1900s.
Fox became the leader of the group after it was disbanded after a decade-long campaign by the KKK to kill members of an order of Christian soldiers, known as the Order of the St George.
Fox eventually became a leader of his own religious order and began to recruit more members, including members of his family.
Fox’s son, Fred, later became a US senator and president.
He later joined the anti-KKK paramilitary group and, at one point, was known to be a member of the KKK.
Fox is also known to have had a close relationship with another prominent figure in the KKK, Fred Hampton, who was eventually jailed for life for the murders in 1942 of three African American women in Kansas.

The Klan later banned the group and Fox was eventually arrested.
In the early 1950s, Fox was involved in another deadly KKK violence.
He was a member in the Oklahoma City bombing of a gas station that killed 168 people and later was the leader in another bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, which killed seven people.
Fox was later arrested and tried for his role in the Birmingham bombing, but was acquitted.
He later married and divorced his first wife and became a father to a daughter.
During his prison sentence, Fox met his future wife, who died from lung cancer.
Fox said at the time that he was heartbroken over her death and that he never considered it his fault.
Following the Birmingham and Birmingham bombings, Fox, now an elder, left the church and joined the Southern Baptist Convention, a group which opposes all forms of discrimination against the LGBT community.
His views on homosexuality, he said in a 2003 speech at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, have evolved in the years since.
“If the Bible says homosexuality is a sin, then it is a moral sin,” Fox said.
‘The brothers are the new Satan’The Southern Baptist Association, the largest Christian denomination in the US, has condemned Fox for his past actions.
SBA president Dr Jonathan Merril said that “the Brothers of God have been the new devil and are trying to destroy Christians everywhere, from their churches to the public square, in their fight against marriage equality”.
“This is the first time in history that two brothers were brought to trial, convicted and sentenced to life in prison for a crime they never committed,” Dr Merril told the AP.
Dr Merril added that Fox and his brother are “trying to use their new stature to bring a greater understanding of the Bible to all Americans.”
“We have come a long way in a short time and the brothers are one of the great modern-day leaders of the world’s largest denomination.”
‘It’s just a game’Critics of Fox’s work say his political views have changed over the years and that the brotherhood of Christian faith has moved away from his old beliefs.
A 2007 video clip of Fox and Fred Hampton appeared on the internet in which the two men discuss their opposition to marriage equality.
Fox says that marriage equality is “a game” to promote gay marriage and that it will “make us more miserable” as people.
Fred insists that marriage is “the only valid form of marriage in this country”.
The video has been viewed nearly two million times.
Other critics of Fox have called the video “pathetic”, calling it “not true” and “a pathetic excuse for a human being” who would rather “fight and die than have the freedom to be who he is”.
“Fred Hampton is one of my favorite brothers, and I don’t think he’d ever have made a video like that if he didn’t think it was a really important issue for him,” Dr David Lane, president of the Southern Poverty Law Centre, told the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, the Southern Baptists have been working to reform the organization and in 2012 the church approved a resolution to remove Fox from the SBA’s governing body.
President of the SBC Bob Vander Plaats said at a conference in 2014 that Fox has been “in a lot of ways a great leader”.
“I think it’s a good time to come back, and we’re going to have a great conference on marriage
